What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown can enhance both the appearance and function of a tooth, providing strength, protection, and an improved aesthetic. It’s a versatile solution for various dental issues, including cracked teeth, large fillings, and teeth that have undergone root canal treatment.

The Dental Crown Process

A dental crown procedure, also known as a dental cap, is a common dental treatment used to restore and protect a damaged or weakened tooth. Here’s an overview of the procedure:

Evaluation: The dentist begins by examining the tooth to assess its condition and determine if a crown is necessary. If the tooth is severely decayed, cracked, or weakened, a crown might be recommended to restore its strength and functionality.

Preparation: The tooth is prepared by removing any decayed or damaged portions. This ensures that the crown will fit properly. Sometimes, the tooth may need to be built up with filling material if a significant portion is missing.

Scan: A digital scan serves as a mold for creating a custom-made crown that fits perfectly over the tooth.

Temporary Crown: While the permanent crown is being fabricated in a dental laboratory, a temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth to protect it and maintain your bite and appearance.

Crown Placement: Once the permanent crown is ready, you return to the dentist’s office. The temporary crown is removed, and the fit, color, and shape of the permanent crown are checked. Adjustments can be made if needed.

Cementation: Once satisfied with the fit and appearance, the dentist permanently cements the crown onto the prepared tooth using dental adhesive. This ensures the crown stays securely in place.

Final Checks: The dentist will assess your bite to make sure it’s aligned properly and make any final adjustments if necessary.
